Through client education and modern arboriculture techniques, Smart Feller Tree Works helps the growth patterns of your trees align with the growth patterns of your life.
We ask a lot of our urban trees. They are challenged by compacted or depleted soils, construction impact, and cramped growing space, just to name a few. We control the size of our houses, roads, and sidewalks, while the treasured trees among them grow larger each year!
We seek to align the growth patterns of our clients and their trees. Pruning a tree properly means cutting in the right place, at the right time of year, for the right reason.
With proper pruning we:
- Increase tree health by removing diseased or dead wood and increasing air flow
- Reduce the potential for branch breakage or tree failure
- Influence fruit or flower production
- Improve house clearance
- Enhance the view
At SFTW’s we practice modern pruning techniques. This means we don’t wear climbing spikes for pruning work, paint over branch cuts, or make cuts between branch unions (topping). For information on proper pruning techniques, visit our friends at treesaregood.org.
For weak or compromised branch junctures, we can combine proper pruning with cabling systems and/or brace rods to help maintain the tree’s structure.
Root System Treatments:
Many symptoms seen in a tree’s canopy, such as tip die-back or fungal infections, can be a result of what is happening underground. Using an Air Spade, compacted soil can be effectively aerated, allowing for the roots to breathe again. Air Spading can also free up a tree’s buttress roots that have been buried too deep, either from improper planting or careless construction techniques. Through Vertical Mulching, soils with low mineral content can be re-vitalized using healthy organic material and mycorrhyzae fungi.
